How do lenders assess radiographers and sonographers?

A salaried radiographer or sonographer is assessed from payslips, with base salary counted in full and on-call, shift and overtime pay usually averaged over recent months. Locum and agency work is assessed like casual or contract income, and work through your own ABN as self-employed.

Radiographers are registered as medical radiation practitioners through AHPRA; sonographers are accredited through the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry instead.

How is medical imaging income assessed?

A front door with keys
  • Base salary.Counted in full.
  • On-call, shift and overtime.Usually averaged over 6 to 12 months; regular patterns count more.
  • Locum or agency work.Assessed like casual or contract income, often after six to twelve months.
  • Your own ABN.Self-employed, from tax returns.

Do registration and accreditation matter?

For professional LMI concessions, they can. Some lenders include selected allied health roles in their concessions and often require AHPRA registration, which radiographers have as medical radiation practitioners. Sonographers are accredited through the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry, which some lenders treat differently.

Check current policies; the healthcare professional home loans page explains how they work.

How is locum income treated?

Lenders want to see that locum work is ongoing, usually with six to twelve months of history, payslips or invoices and bank statements. If you work through several agencies, lenders add the income together once it is steady.

The casual employment and contractor pages explain the rules.
